Knox-Box Rapid Entry System

In 2012 the Palo Fire Department began using the Knox-Box.

Q: What is the Knox-Box?
A: The Knox-Box is a small and secure key-holder that is mounted outside of residences, commercial buildings or industrial facilities. (Pictures posted below)

Q: What does the Knox-Box do?
A: The Knox-Box requires no maintenance, and is simply mounted on the specified building.  In the event of an emergency, authorized fire department personnel have access to a master key, which will open up the Knox-Box on the designated building.  Inside the Knox-Box, owners can store the key to their home which will allow firefighters access.

Q: What if I don't have a Knox-Box and there is an emergency inside?
A: With the Knox-Box firefighters are able to gain entry into the building without having to break down the door, or crawl through windows. This minimizes losses for the property owner, and reduces time to gain entry into the building.

Q: Is the system secure?
A: Knox-Box Master Key Retention units mounted inside of the fire trucks provide accountability with an audit trail giving the date, time and user ID for each key release. This means that only in the event of an emergency will your building be accessible by the fire department.  The Knox-Box is also tamper resistant.

Q: What does a Knox-Box cost?
A: The Knox-Box comes in a wide variety of styles however a average cost for residential use is around $160

Q:How do I get one?
A: Due to the security of the system, forms must be obtained from the Palo Fire Department and sent to the Knox company. Please contact the Palo Fire Station or a Firefighter if you are interested.

The Palo Fire Department highly recommends that both homeowners and commercial businesses within the City of Palo, as well as the Palo Fire District #6 obtain and install the Knox-Box. It could save minutes in an emergency, ultimately providing care to the patient faster.
